KAMAY WHARVES
Pulvin contributed to the successful delivery of two new wharves at La Perouse and Kurnell on Botany Bay (Kamay) for the NSW Government. These contemporary structures replace the original wharves, which operated from the 1890s until 1974, when severe storms rendered them beyond repair.
The Kurnell site holds deep historical and cultural significance. As the first landing place of Captain James Cook, it forms a key part of Australia’s colonial history. Equally, the area remains an important place of enduring cultural heritage for First Nations people. In recognition of this, the wharf designs incorporate large scale artworks by local Aboriginal artists, creating a meaningful connection to Country.
La Perouse Wharf features a distinctive dog leg design, extending approximately 100 metres from the shoreline, with a further 80 metres running parallel for berthing. Kurnell Wharf extends approximately 230 metres into the bay, providing generous space for a range of uses.
This was a highly complex project, requiring a careful balance of heavy marine construction and refined architectural detailing, including several first of type finishes. Delivered within a sensitive and protected marine environment, the project demanded a meticulous approach to both engineering and environmental stewardship.
Designed for accessibility and versatility, the wharves support a variety of uses including fishing, cultural learning, and vessel drop off and pick up. Unique architectural elements, such as Aboriginal artworks sandblasted into the concrete and integrated into the shelter ceilings, enrich both the visual and cultural experience.
Pulvin Lighting provided specialised expertise across all aspects of the lighting design and delivery for both wharves. This included the procurement and supply of luminaires, along with the integration of a state of the art lighting control system, ensuring optimal performance, durability, and the highest standards of quality.
